Bakery · Multiple
Award-winning bakery with breakfast and lunch. Sticky buns, sandwiches, and pastries. Multiple Cambridge locations.
Bakery/Cafe · Harvard Square
Joanne Chang's Harvard Square outpost of the Flour Bakery + Cafe empire she started in the South End in 2000. The sticky buns are legendary — Bobby Flay famously couldn't beat them on Throwdown. Sandwiches are substantial, cookies are perfect.
Vegetarian · Central Square
Plant-based bowls, wraps, and elixirs; the Goddess bowl and the Dynamo with fire sauce are the two orders regulars default to. A Central Square fixture since 2010, and one of the early movers in what became the grain-bowl category.
Bagel Shop · Riverside
Cafe with espresso, coffee, home-made bagels, and elaborate bagel sandwiches. Fresh bagels baked daily. Cozy Harvard Square spot popular for breakfast and lunch.
Bagel Shop · East Cambridge
Artisan bagel shop and café serving hand-rolled bagels, creative sandwiches, and specialty coffee. Fresh-baked daily with quality ingredients. Opened 2024.
Coffee Shops · Mid-Cambridge
Long, narrow neighborhood coffee shop between Harvard and Porter Squares. Quality espresso, pastries, bagels, and sandwiches. Rotating local art, a loaded community bulletin board, and regulars who treat it like their second living room.
Bakeries · Porter Square
Slow-fermented sourdough bagels shaped and boiled in-house. Expanding the storefront in 2024 to meet demand. Not New York-style but Bon Appétit once called them among the best bagels in the US outside of New York.
Coffee Shop · Central Square
The Central Square satellite of Gerry Wolf's 1369 Coffee House. Same house-made chai, same union-shop ethos as the Inman original, closer to the Red Line. A default Central Square study seat for MIT and Lesley students.
Ethiopian · Central Square
Central Square Eritrean-Ethiopian restaurant since 1986. Traditional mesob (woven basket) dining — diners sit around a basket with the food served in the center. Two kinds of house-made injera (rice flour and teff), and one of the strongest vegetarian combos in Cambridge.
Indian · Harvard Square
Second-floor North Indian restaurant above the Galeria on JFK Street, with one of the best elevated views of Harvard Square. Lunch buffet, tandoor, and an extensive vegetarian program.
Bakeries · Huron Village
Corner bakery and sandwich counter in Huron Village. Naturally-leavened breads, pastries made in house, and a short rotating menu of seasonal sandwiches and soups. Hi-Rise Sweets is a pastry-focused sister location that opened in 2024.
Tatte Bakery locations throughout Cambridge (Harvard, Kendall, Porter) are go-tos for under-30-minute lunches — shakshuka, halloumi sandwiches, or salads with a cortado. Clover Food Lab in Harvard and Kendall does fast, vegetarian lunch with rotating menus driven by what's seasonal. For bodega-style sandwiches, Darwin's (Mount Auburn or Cambridge Street) is legendary among locals; expect a 15-minute line at noon on weekdays. Chipotle, Sweetgreen, and Cava near Harvard and Kendall Squares serve 5-7 minute bowl lunches. MIT students head to the Stata Center cluster for fast options and Legal Sea Foods for a longer sit-down.
