About This Exhibition

The Old Burying Ground, also known as God's Acre, has served as a burial ground since 1635 — just five years after Cambridge was founded. Over 1,000 people are buried here, including eight Harvard presidents, Revolutionary War soldiers, and two formerly enslaved people whose recently restored headstones tell important stories of early Cambridge. The weathered slate headstones with their carved skulls, angels, and willow motifs are masterworks of early American folk art.
